MUSEUMS OF THE RYAZAN REGION

    In Ryazan region there are more than 50 state and municipal museums.
   
The Pearl of Ryazan is the Ryazan Kremlin, the most ancient historical kernel of the city. During its long life the Kremlin was reconstructed several times. Now it presents the whole complex of remarkable monuments of the old Russian style and the architecture of classicism of XV-XIX centuries. In 1968 the ensemble of architectural monuments of the Ryazan Kremlin arranged historical collections and archeological relics of the Old Ryazan City. It turned into a historical-architectural museum which since 1995 has been included in the State Corpus of the most valuable objects of the cultural heritage of Russian Federation.

The historical – archeological reserve “Old Ryazan” is a part of the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum- Reserve. The unique archeological memorial of Ancient Ryazan is one of the largest sites of former cities without modern building up in Europe. This reserve is situated on the territory of the capital of the Ryazan princedom which was destroyed during Tartar invasion in 1237. The 13 ^th century cultural layer has survived nearly on the surface. Since the 19 ^th century different kinds of treasures have been found here. The last was found in 2005.

The uniqueness of the Ryazan area is in its rich military-historical past and in the modern military present. There are four military institutes in Ryazan among which the Institute of Airborne Forces, the only institution in the world. The traditions of valour are stored in the museums of military history:

   The airborne forces museum is situated in the building of the Institution of Airborne Forces. In the exposition of the museum there are 6000 exhibits: flags of airborne forces, orders and medals of paratroopers, home – produced and foreign arm, a collection of parachutes, military equipment, models of military clothes, rare documents. It is the only museum of the kind in the world.

   The museum of history of the long distance bomber air force presents home – produced bombing aircrafts which were adopted by the Soviet Army.

The Ryazan region Fine Arts Museum named after I. P. Pozhalostin 
 This museum is one of the oldest museums in Russia. It has rich collections of painting, drawing, sculpture of the West European and home art. The exposition of Russian art represents various kinds of works of art from old Russian icons to the works of masters of the beginning of the XX century. A colorful world of folk art comes to life in the works of art trades masters, among them there are works by Ryazan masters: Skopin ceramics, Michailov lace, Kadom embroidery, Shilovo wicker - making. The museum arranges exhibitions from its own collections and the State Museum Fund and literary – music evenings. The museum building itself is the work of art, it is a monument of architecture of Russian classicism.

The gallery “Victor Ivanov and Ryazan land” is a part of the Ryazan Fine Arts Museum. 
The gallery is the unique collection of painting and drawing of the national artist of the USSR, academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Victor Ivanov, whose creative work is closely connected with Ryazan land. The exposition of the museum tells about bright and dark events in peasants’ life, about the beauty of the Russian character. The artist presents philosophical reflections about the circle of people’s life.

The state museum – reserve of Sergey Esenin
     The museum is situated in a picturesque place on the bank of the Oka river in the old Russian village of Konstantinovo, the native land of the greatest poet of Russia Sergey Esenin. The museum expositions are unique. The memorial exposition is connected with the poet’s relatives and describes the Ryazan period of the poet’s life. The literary exposition tells about Esenin’s creative work. In the museum you can see documentary films which demonstrate some episodes from the poet’s life.

The Ryazan literary museum of Sergey Esenin
    The museum was founded in 2002 in Ryazan. In the constant exposition there are rare books documentary and photo exhibits, unique collected poems, which were published in Esenin’s time.

The museum of the history of young people’s movement
    The museum is situated in an old private house of a Ryazan governor, which was built in the XIX century. In its funds there are unique exhibits and collections, which are connected with modern young people’s movements, with the history of local wars, with different public movements and parties, with outstanding and extraordinary events. The museum regularly organizes exhibitions, literary – music evenings and opening days.

The memorial museum – estate of academician Ivan Pavlov.
    There are places in Russia, which are always dear to us, because they are connected with the glorious names Russian people are proud of. To these places belongs a small wooden house, which belonged to Pavlov’s family. Now it is a museum. It includes the memorial and scientific parts. The expositions describe the course of Life of the first Nobel prize winner, his Ryazan period of life, they contain the richest collection of the memorial things of Pavlov’s family. The large part of the museum exposition is devoted to the main course of his life – physiology. Different scientific symposia and exhibitions are organized in the museum. The memorial estate is popular with its numerous visitors and Ryazan citizens.

The museum of K. Tsiolkovsky
   The museum is situated in the native village of the scientist Izhevskoe. The Ryazan period of Tsiolkovsky’s life, his theory, fragments from the history of cosmonautics, a cosmic apparatus and other objects from the sphere of cosmic developing are described here.

The museum of the Russian song
   The museum contains the unique exhibits from the history of Russian lyric songs, describes the destinies of outstanding singers and composers, who worked in this genre. The large memorial and documental fund of the museum connects with the life and creative work of the greatest composer of the Russian lyric song Averkin.

The memorial of M.D. Skobelev
  The village of Zaborovo – a patrimony of general Skobelev. On the territory of the estate you can visit the restored church, where the general and his parents were buried, the school built by Skobelev. In the building of the school there is a museum, which contains things describing the short but bright destiny of  M.D. Skobelev, whose deeds were equal with Suvorov’s ones.

The museum of horse – breeding  Institute
   The museum is organized on the basis of the Institute, which is situated in the Ryazan region. Its exposition presents the history of horse – breeding, different races of horses, peculiarities of their breeding and looking after them, the variety of harness.

The museum of honey
   Everything about honey and beekeeping is widely presented in the museum of honey which is organized on the basis of the Institute of beekeeping. Here you can learn much interesting about the history of wild – hive beekeeping in Russia, new technologies of honey – gathering and taste different kinds of honey.

The national museum of P.P. Semenov – Tyan – Shansky
   The exposition of the museum is devoted to the life and achievements of one of the greatest Russian scientist – investigator, a world known geographer and traveler P.P. Semenov – Tyan – Shansky.

The center of Cossack culture
   The main aim of the center is to preserve Cossack culture and the traditions of the Cossaacs and to bring up children to love their motherland. More than 100 boys from different areas of the Ryazan region learn military science on the basis of this center.

In every area of the Ryazan region there is a museum of regional studies, which describes its history, culture, traditions.
